I ordered this set from Amazon on December 19th and waited about 6 weeks for this thing to arrive on my doorstep the other day. UPS didn't even ring the doorbell, they just left it on the ground... ;( anyways...

This set came in an attractive metal box container, quite sturdy and solid. Once opened, the pieces came in five numbered bags for easy modular build, a sticker sheet and, of course the instruction booklet. I wanted to enjoy my experience, so I just took my time in building this model. After completing the build in two hours, here's my thought;

PROS: A beautiful model,
Solid heavy build of 555 pieces
Turret turns 360 with knob on back
Comes with 2 minifigs
easy to build, has 5 numbered bags
Love the color, and all the fine detail!
Blows away the Probuilder Abrams, as far as details go

CONS: Turret falls off if tank is held upside down
One piece (1 x 4 brick) was defective, so I had to replace it!!
Tank is just a tad bit too wide for miniscale figs
Stickers ;(

Final thought;

MEGA BLOKS at it's best! Best MB set that I currently own right now. This set is now my favorite Probuilder tank with my Probuilder COMBAT TANK now being in second place! It's that good!

Woohoo! Thanks for the review info, Death!

I'm glad Amazon has made that model available, there was a time there when it looked like they'd never actually ship it but your review proves it'll arrive and you've given us all a good idea of what to expect.

Sorry I don't have my own pictures. Fortunately, someone else who owns this set put up some pictures here; http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=357058

...And here's a picture of the combat tank http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=45742

PS. Here a note about Probuilder Combat Tank.

I actually bought this set back when it came out in 1999/2000. At the time, I was turned off by LEGO subconciously when they started juniorizing their sets. Like this one here for $15 USD http://www.brickset.com/detail/?Set=6565-1

That time, I didn't realize why I bought a non-LEGO. All I know is that I didn't have any tanks, and for a set with 350+ pieces for 9.99, I took it!

After the build, I wasn't too happy with the set. It was a great model, but I just wasn't used to the lower quality of brick. Within 2 months, I abandoned this thing in my basement, then GAVE IT AWAY months later!!

Something that I regret.. I got rid of it..

so now I ended up buying two of them, and the quality isn't as bad as I thought!

What was I thinking back then HUH!?!?

Thanks for the excellent and thorough review, deathmetal! I've been dying to see this set in person ever since I first learned about it online some months back. The fall-off turret is unfortunate, but IIRC they did the 9734 M1A1 Abrams the same way a few years ago. At least the Leopard has the gear-driven turntable, which is a new innovation in Mega Bloks designs, I think.

The 9707 Combat Tank is one of my all time favorites, even if the square barrel was a bit of a disappointment. Its original price was either $7.99 or (more likely) $9.99, and it had 340 pieces! LEGO wasn't offering anything remotely similar, and they were charging $30 or more for a 300-piece set.

I've long held the opinion that the brilliance of Mega Bloks' ProBuilder line is directly responsible for the LEGO Creator series as well as the expansion of LEGO's Shop-at-Home service in the early 2000's.

It's too bad that current circumstances prevent Mega Bloks from releasing more sets like this now.

Thanks again for the review, deathmetal!

Dave!

A word to the wise, Marshall's Dress for Less is stocking up for the Christmas rush and they have Leopard 2's available for $29.95 in the tin.

Just finished an awesome BumbleBee Moc using the Knex Mechwarrior set Sunder and using the panels and wheels from a yellow street mods set as fairings on the mecha.

A Marshall's in eastern Ohio also had one of the Gromitz minehunter sets in the tin.
